Pathrode with Mutton curry is one of the Mangalorean Pathrode variety dish prepared with colocasia leaves. Taro leaves or colocasia leaves pathrode is one of the popular dishes in Mangalore and the Konkan coastal region. It is also called Kesuvina yele in Kannada and Theryachi pana in Konkani.
Colocasia leaves grow in plenty in Mangalore – Konkan region during the rainy season. This plant is packed with nutrients, which are rich in iron, calcium, vitamin C, antioxidants. I remember my mom telling me ” vorsaak yek pavti muni khaije” Meaning we need to eat the dish prepared by colocasia leaves at least once a year.
Colocasia leaves are not consumed directly as they start itching. Once this is cooked it does not itch. Tamarind is added to avoid the itching and also for the taste. Also while cutting colocasia hands itches. To avoid apply tamarind on hands.
Coming to the Pathrode with Mutton curry recipe, the more leaves you add tastier is the pathrode. Wrapping this in banana leaves and steaming gives a pleasant aroma. Some of them also use teak tree leaves. Pathrode generates a lot of body heat. By adding mutton to the dish and tempering it with ghee helps reducing it. Pathrode with Mutton Curry Recipe
Ingredients
¼ kg idli rice
¼ kg boiled rice
Soak above for 4 hours
6-8 big size Colocasia leaves( Finely chopped)
½ scraped coconut
Some banana leaves for steam the Pathrode
A Lemon size tamarind.
1 kg mutton boiled with ginger-garlic paste, 1 tsp turmeric powder, and salt.
Thick and thin (first and second extract) coconut roce of one coconut.
For masala
2 tbsp Chana daal
2 tbsp Urad daal
1 tsp Mustard seeds
4 tbsp Coriander seeds
2 tsp Jeera
20 Byadgi chillies
1 tsp Methi seeds
2 tsp Saunf
3 tbsp Coconut oil
1 Scraped coconut
2 Sliced onions
1 tsp Turmeric powder
For tadka
2 tsp mustard seeds,
6 strigs of curry leaves
1 Onion sliced
3 tbsp of ghee
Step-by-Step Preparation of Pathrode with Mutton Curry
Cook Mutton
Take 1 kg mutton boiled with ginger-garlic paste, 1 tsp turmeric powder, and salt.
Making Masala
Heat a deep pan. Pour the coconut oil. Now add chana and urad daal. Fry for a while and add all the masala ingredients in a slow flame till the aroma spreads. Off the flame and let it cool.
Powder the fried masala and divide it into two portions.
Heat another pan and fry one medium-sized scraped coconut and two sliced onions together. Go on frying till coconut leaves its moisture and onions get transparent let it cool. Add one portion of the above masala mix it. Also add half lemon size tamarind, tsp of turmeric powder and grind it ( No need to fine grind). Use the second squeezed roce (thin) for grinding and washing the grinder). Keep aside.
Preparing Pathrode
Now grind the rice, a hand full of scraped coconut, half of the tamarind, half tsp turmeric powder and one portion of powdered fried masala with little salt and water. The ground batter should be a thick consistency.
Now mix the colocasia leaves in it. Adjust the salt. And steam the Pathrode by wrapping it with banana leaves.
For masala curry
Take a large-sized vessel and mix the ground masala in it. The masala shouldn’t be too watery.
Add the boiled mutton with its soup & let it boil for a while. Adjust the salt.
Cut the Pathrode into cubes. Add it into the curry & let it boil in the medium to low flame.
Final step tadka
Heat the ghee, add two tsp of mustard seeds, let it splutter. Add curry leaves and one sliced onion. Fry it till the onions are transparent.
Add it to the pathrode curry and immediately add thick roce. Mix it gently. Stop the flame after a single boil.
Now the delicious Pathrode with Mutton curry delicacy is ready.

Variation:- you can avoid coconut roce (coconut milk). Alternative to roce (coconut milk) you can add 2 tablespoons of milk cream.
